Prosecutors have filed new formal charges against Arne Bye in an ongoing sexual assault investigation. The charges include six counts involving 16 different victims according to police officials.
The new indictment describes 33 separate rape acts of varying character. For five victims, Bye faces additional charges of abusing his professional position alongside rape allegations.
Police attorney Ole Andreas Aftret from Trøndelag police district confirmed the developments. He stated one victim's case involves position abuse without accompanying rape charges.
Bye also faces charges for producing sexualized content involving children. The charges reference a situation where a minor under 18 was filmed during a medical examination.
His defense lawyer Frode Wisth declined to comment on the new charges. He told media he maintains regular contact with his client and will review the allegations.
Aftret emphasized the investigation remains active and evidence could change. He clarified that charging doesn't determine guilt but reflects what prosecutors consider most likely based on current evidence.
Police previously identified 34 victims in their broader investigation. Eighteen of these aren't included in the new charging document for various reasons according to officials.
Some cases fell outside statute of limitations while others didn't meet legal definitions for rape or position abuse. Evidence clarity also affected which cases proceeded.
Investigators recently searched two vacation properties in Levanger as part of their probe. No findings resulted from these searches according to police statements.
The timing stemmed from investigators finally processing numerous electronic devices seized earlier this year. They specifically sought pre-2016 footage during these searches.
Prosecutors will seek continued detention until Bye's appeal hearing scheduled for November 26. The former municipal chief physician from Frosta received a 21-year sentence on June 6 for 70 rapes of female patients and 82 instances of position abuse.
He has appealed substantial portions of that conviction. The legal process continues as both sides prepare for upcoming proceedings.
This case highlights ongoing challenges in addressing sexual misconduct within medical settings. The substantial number of victims and serious nature of allegations suggest systemic failures in professional oversight.
