Sweden’s RSV season is underway, and doctors are hopeful that far fewer infants will end up in the hospital this year. A new preventive treatment has been welcomed with open arms across the country. In past seasons, around 1,650 children under one year old have needed hospital care for RSV infections. RSV isn’t usually deadly in a country with strong healthcare like Sweden, but it still causes serious worry for parents. Many rush to pediatric emergency rooms when their babies struggle to breathe, have a fever, and experience mucus buildup. According to Susanne Strömdahl, an infectious disease doctor and investigator at the Public Health Agency of Sweden, very young infants are especially vulnerable. Their small airways can become severely affected, sometimes requiring oxygen support or feeding tubes if they can’t eat due to high fever. The youngest babies, just a few months old, are at risk of apnea, or breathing pauses, during RSV infection. This new preventive option could significantly ease the burden on families and hospitals alike during the peak virus season. Parents across Stockholm and beyond are watching closely as clinics roll out the treatment.
