Northern Lights tourism is attracting more visitors and increasing in value. Crowded destinations and sustainability challenges are also growing problems.

Numbers from Innovation Norway's fresh Northern Lights report for winter show this trend.

Aase Marthe J. Horrigmo, Innovation Norway's tourism director, said in a statement that interest in seeing the aurora draws travelers worldwide to Norway. Northern Lights tourism grows in both volume and value, with more visitors and clear growth among high-spending travelers.

The average Northern Lights tourist spends about 2,780 Norwegian kroner per person daily.

Most stay in hotels or travel with coastal ferry operators Hurtigruten or Havila. About one-third purchase all or parts of their trip as package tours.

Horrigmo said Northern Lights tourism creates substantial ripple effects across Northern Norway. When more people travel together, choose organized experiences, and spend money in local restaurants and shops, this strengthens year-round tourism and local jobs in the region.

The survey shows Northern Lights tourists are among the most satisfied with their Norway trips. Nine out of ten recommend their Norway holiday to others.

However, many tourists report overcrowded destinations. One in four said one or more places they visited felt overcrowded due to too many tourists.

This was particularly a problem in Tromsø and Lofoten. Thirty percent of tourists visiting these areas experienced them as overcrowded.

The NHO's destination analysis for Troms concludes increased tourism in Tromsø creates pressure on nature and local communities.

Horrigmo said Northern Lights tourism is an amazing success story, but we must manage it wisely. For growth to be sustainable, we must help spread experiences and value creation more broadly, both geographically and through season extension.

This is among measures NHO suggests in its destination analysis.

Therefore, Innovation Norway developed new Northern Lights pages on VisitNorway.com. Travelers can search for locations nationwide and get updated aurora forecasts.

Horrigmo said this makes planning easier for travelers and can also help spread Northern Lights tourists.

While Norway benefits economically from aurora tourism, the concentration of visitors in few locations shows the industry's growing pains. Spreading tourism geographically seems necessary to preserve both visitor experience and local environments.
