Health authorities in Norway are preparing for the upcoming influenza season. The Norwegian Institute of Public Health recommends vaccination for over 1.6 million residents considered at risk.

Virus activity has been increasing in recent weeks. Laboratory-confirmed cases have doubled weekly, reaching 2 percent in week 41. While overall infection numbers remain low, the trend shows clear growth.

Siri Helene Hauge from the Norwegian Institute of Public Health said it's too early to predict this winter's infection patterns. "Influenza typically increases from November, with the main outbreak often starting around the new year and peaking during winter holiday weeks," she explained.

COVID-19 has not yet established a consistent seasonal pattern. Last year saw an autumn peak with relatively low winter occurrence. Health officials also expect increasing RS virus cases this winter, potentially peaking in early 2026.

Last year's flu season proved particularly severe. It resulted in over 8,200 hospitalizations, while COVID-19 sent another 5,800 people to hospitals. Most hospitalized patients belonged to high-risk groups including elderly people, those with chronic illnesses, or individuals with weakened immune systems.

Current vaccination efforts are underway across Norwegian municipalities. The campaign focuses heavily on influenza protection. Health authorities strongly recommend that risk group members get vaccinated before flu season intensifies.

Healthcare workers are also advised to get vaccinated. Other individuals may choose to receive the vaccine if they wish.

"We ensure all risk group members who want vaccination receive it," Hauge stated. "Last season, 1.46 million flu vaccines were administered."

Beyond influenza protection, elderly and at-risk individuals should consider COVID-19 booster shots. Many may also benefit from pneumonia vaccination.

The flu vaccine covers three different virus variants selected by WHO experts. It remains uncertain how well this year's formulation will match circulating strains.

"There's still too little flu virus circulating in Norway to assess vaccine effectiveness," Hauge noted. "But getting some protection is better than none."

Multiple factors influence each flu season's severity. Population immunity, circulating virus types, and vaccine effectiveness all play roles. Temperature and other respiratory infections can also impact outbreak patterns.

The substantial vaccination target reflects Norway's practical approach to public health. With winter approaching and indoor gatherings increasing, preventive measures become crucial for healthcare system stability.
