A Norwegian court has acquitted a man of attempted murder charges after he stole a telehandler forklift and drove through Fredrikstad city center. The defendant was found not guilty of trying to kill police officers during the April incident.

The man admitted to careless driving but denied any intent to harm officers. His defense lawyer stated the court reached the correct conclusion. "We believe the result is right," the lawyer said. "This wasn't attempted murder but careless driving."

Police units attempted to stop the stolen forklift as it moved toward central Fredrikstad. The vehicle nearly collided with a police car during the chase. Officers described fearing for their lives during the confrontation.

One officer recalled thinking he might not return home to his family. "This was the first time I thought I might not come home," he told the court.

Why was the attempted murder charge dropped? The court determined the driver lacked control of the vehicle and couldn't confirm conscious intent to harm officers. Luck and quick police reactions prevented more serious outcomes.

The 20-year-old driver explained he initially sought a place to smoke when he found the construction site vehicle with keys in the ignition. He then drove through a fence and began the chaotic journey.

Despite the acquittal on the most serious charges, the man received an eight-month prison sentence for multiple traffic and drug violations. He also lost his driving privileges for two years.

The prosecution had sought a longer sentence and five-year license suspension. Both the defendant and police described a terrifying situation that left lasting impacts on the officers involved.

This case highlights the challenges in proving intent in vehicle-related crimes. The court prioritized evidence of the driver's actual control and conscious purpose over the dangerous outcome.
