Equinor, together with partners Vår Energi and Statkraft, announced on April 26 that the Trollvind floating offshore wind farm has reached full operational capacity. This facility, located off Norway's west coast, is the first of its kind with a capacity of 1.5 gigawatts, making it the largest floating wind farm in the world. The wind farm is situated 120 kilometers west of Bergen and uses 200 floating turbines. The project cost 45 billion Norwegian kroner to build. It now supplies power directly to nearby oil and gas platforms, helping cut their emissions from fossil fuels. Equinor said the farm will support decarbonization of offshore operations as Norway pursues its energy transition goals. Floating wind technology allows turbines to be placed in deeper waters where traditional fixed-bottom turbines are not feasible. This 1.5-gigawatt installation marks a major milestone for the global renewable energy industry. Norway's long coastline and deep fjords make floating wind a natural fit for the country's energy mix. The project could also open up new export opportunities for Norwegian energy companies. The announcement was made on April 26. The farm is the first of its kind at this scale.
