Norwegian Christmas spending to hit record 150 billion kroner

By Nordics Today •

Norwegian Christmas spending is expected to reach 150 billion kroner this year, with each person spending 26,800 kroner on average. Economic improvements including wage growth and interest rate cuts are driving the 5% increase. November now accounts for nearly half of all holiday purchases as consumers start shopping earlier.

Norwegians will spend an average of 26,800 kroner ($2,500) each on Christmas shopping this year. The Confederation of Norwegian Enterprise predicts a 5% increase in holiday spending compared to 2024.

Chief economist Øystein Dørum said the high-cost period is finally over. Consumers now have more purchasing power as economic conditions improve.

NHO Service and Handel estimates Norwegians will spend 150 billion kroner in November and December. This marks a return to growth after three years of declining sales following the unusually high Christmas spending in 2020.

What drives this Christmas shopping growth in Norway? Real wage growth, the first interest rate cuts, and more people working while unemployment remains low all contribute. Managing director Vegard Einan confirmed these factors should support strong holiday sales.

During the last two months of the year, Norwegian purchases increase by 22% compared to an average month. Sales more than double for certain items like kitchen equipment, toys, and books.

Norwegian online stores will receive 15 billion kroner during the Christmas season. This represents a 10% increase from 2024.

November now accounts for nearly half of all Christmas shopping. Last year, November made up 49% of holiday purchases. The early shopping trend continues with Black Week becoming increasingly important for Norwegian consumers.

The numbers suggest Norwegian households feel confident enough to spend substantially despite recent economic challenges. This Christmas shopping surge indicates genuine economic recovery rather than just seasonal enthusiasm.
