Two-Thirds of Norwegian Spring Herring Quota Caught

Norwegian fishing vessels have caught 66 percent of this year's spring herring quota. Over 40 boats landed 44,605 tons last week alone. The majority of the catch came from coastal areas near Smøla, Hitra and Frøya islands. Wednesday was the most productive day with 13,782 tons recorded. An additional 312 tons were caught in the Vestfjorden area of northern Norway. Fishermen have now harvested 170,065 tons of the total 252,065-ton quota. Only 82,000 tons remain available for the rest of the fishing season. The Norwegian Herring Sales Organization reported these figures in their weekly update. They described the recent fishing activity as particularly strong. The spring herring fishery represents one of Norway's most important commercial fishing operations. These coastal waters have supported herring fishing for generations. With most of the quota already caught, fishing pressure will likely decrease in coming weeks.
