A Finnish police officer has been fired after accepting thousands of euros in bribes. The Eastern Uusimaa Police Department terminated the officer following his conviction for bribery in September.
The officer received a 60-day suspended prison sentence for taking bribes. A woman involved in the case was fined 80 day-fines for offering the bribes.
How did the bribery scheme work? The woman sent the officer approximately 3,000 euros through MobilePay, Finland's popular mobile payment service. She made multiple small transfers during 2022 and 2023. Her goal was to obtain information about her son and his criminal cases from police databases.
The officer accessed crime report information about the woman's son three times but never shared the details with her. Court documents reveal he showed reluctance about the woman's contacts and money transfers.
Why was his punishment so severe? The court noted the officer should have known better than to accept the money. He had no valid reason for keeping the funds. The judge stated he could have taken effective measures to stop the contact, reject the money, and report the situation to his supervisor.
The officer only returned the 3,000 euros after the criminal investigation began. The court determined he accepted a bribe intended to influence his official duties.
The police department stated the officer demonstrated completely inappropriate unreliability and irrevocably crossed acceptability boundaries. He lost the trust of both his employer and the police community.
This case highlights the strict ethical standards Finnish police must maintain. Even officers with long service records face dismissal when they violate public trust. The zero-tolerance approach shows how seriously Finland takes police integrity.
