Police conducted a surprise inspection at Stegra's steel plant in Boden on Tuesday. Officers worked alongside Sweden's Work Environment Authority and Tax Agency during the operation. Multiple police units and a police helicopter participated in the coordinated action.
Maria Fredriksson from regional police communications confirmed the ongoing operation. She said authorities will release more information later today.
Stegra is currently building a new steel production facility in northern Sweden. The company aims to manufacture products that reduce carbon dioxide emissions.
Company spokesperson Niklas Eklund described the inspection as routine. "This is a flying inspection," Eklund said. "They visit us periodically and sometimes bring police along, which they did this time."
The Work Environment Authority frequently conducts unannounced inspections to combat labor market crime. Agency spokesman Staffan Dickson confirmed this practice when reached for comment. He noted the authority had limited information available during the early stages of the operation.
While authorities haven't disclosed specific reasons for Tuesday's action, such multi-agency inspections typically target serious regulatory violations. The presence of tax officials suggests possible financial irregularities are under investigation alongside workplace safety concerns.
