A Finnish appeals court has increased the prison sentence for a street racer involved in a fatal collision that killed two young men. The Helsinki Court of Appeal raised Veeti Erkki Olavi Nikunen's punishment from three to four years in prison.
The 21-year-old was driving at extreme speeds with seven passengers in Porvoo during the early hours of October 1, 2022. Three young people were riding in the trunk of his Audi sedan.
Nikunen crashed his vehicle into a Skoda carrying two men in their twenties. Both men in the Skoda died in the violent collision.
The District Court had originally convicted the young man on two counts of aggravated manslaughter and multiple counts of aggravated assault. They sentenced him to three years imprisonment.
Lower court judges considered the other driver's intoxication as a mitigating factor. They suggested the Skoda driver's condition might have contributed to the crash.
The appeals court disagreed with this assessment. They increased Nikunen's sentence by one full year.
Tests revealed the deceased Skoda driver had drugs in his system. He was also under a driving ban at the time of the accident.
The Court of Appeal determined these facts alone did not prove the Skoda driver shared responsibility for the collision.
Judges noted Nikunen drove while heavily intoxicated. He maintained excessive speeds throughout a dangerous journey.
His reckless driving continued through multiple traffic-light controlled intersections during dark nighttime conditions.
The court stated this case involved more than just a momentary lapse in judgment. Nikunen demonstrated sustained dangerous behavior behind the wheel.
This tragic incident highlights Finland's ongoing struggle with young drivers taking extreme risks. The appeals court decision shows authorities are taking stronger stances against dangerous driving behavior that endangers public safety.
