A new community recycling center called Aputupa has opened in Rajamäki, Finland. The center aims to promote circular economy while supporting local welfare initiatives.
Founder Maria explains the project addresses a clear need in the Rajamäki-Kirkonkylä area. She notes much usable household goods still end up in landfills unnecessarily.
"We noticed many perfectly good items were being thrown away," Maria said in a statement. "We wanted to create a place where these items could find new homes while supporting environmental protection."
The center accepts donations of clean, undamaged household goods including clothing, shoes, dishes, electronics, books, toys and sports equipment. All items for sale come from community donations.
Donations can be dropped off at the Kievarintie 14 B 8 location or at the Nurmijärven kirja store on Pratikankuja. The center also offers pickup service for larger donations.
Proceeds from sales support local charities including kindergartens, schools and artist support programs. The store has already participated in initiatives like helping homeless people by distributing gift cards redeemable at the store.
"Our operation is just beginning but the response has been enthusiastic," Maria noted. "Donations come in daily and people are finding new treasures for themselves."
The center operates with volunteers, work trainees and soon will include student interns. They collaborate with several local organizations including the Red Cross Rajamäki branch and the village association.
Future plans may include expanding to Kirkonkylä and offering new locally requested products. The operation model evolves based on community needs.
"We want to help build a more sustainable and participatory Nurmijärvi," Maria summarized.
The initiative represents a practical approach to Finland's circular economy goals, showing how local action can directly reduce waste while strengthening community bonds.
