Record number of Swedish children suspected of murder plots

Sweden sees record numbers of children under 15 suspected of planning murders, despite progress in reducing shootings. Gang crime remains a serious challenge as youth involvement spikes dramatically. Authorities struggle to balance immediate enforcement with long-term prevention.

Swedish authorities report some successes in fighting gang crime after three years. But alarming trends are emerging. At least 127 children under 15 are suspected of planning murders this year. This represents an explosive increase in a short time.

The fight against gang crime is a key part of the government's political agreement. Authorities have strengthened penalties and increased resources for law enforcement. They have also introduced new tools to combat organized crime.

Yet it remains difficult to claim gang violence is being pushed back. Police statistics show shootings have decreased dramatically. Fewer people are dying from gun violence.

In 2022, Sweden recorded 314 shootings through September. For the same period this year, the number dropped to 113. Deaths from shootings fell from 49 to 26 people during this timeframe. These numbers do not include the ten victims of the Risbergska nursing home massacre in Örebro.

The dramatic rise in children involved in serious crime planning suggests deeper societal problems. While reduced shootings show progress, the youth crime trend indicates gang recruitment strategies are evolving. Authorities face the dual challenge of suppressing current violence while preventing future criminal recruitment.
