Rescue Service's Million-Dollar Lawsuit Dismissed After Legal Error

The Mälardalen Rescue Service lost its three million kronor lawsuit due to a legal technicality. Their chief remained unaware of the dismissal for weeks.

Christer Ängehov, the rescue service manager, expressed shock when informed about the court's decision. He said they had trusted their lawyer to handle the case properly.

The court dismissed the case because the rescue service's legal representative lacked proper authorization. The court requested proof of representation, but the lawyer never submitted it.

Lawyer Tanja Grundström explained she missed the court's email because it went to her personal account. She called the situation unfortunate and noted that important legal matters should not depend on one individual.

When asked why she didn't inform the rescue service about the dismissal, she offered no clear answer. She confirmed she has prepared an appeal.

The legal dispute began when new radio equipment failed during critical operations. Smoke divers couldn't hear each other while fighting fires.

The rescue service claimed breach of contract, while the supplier blamed user error. RTMD then sued to recover the three million kronor paid for the faulty equipment.

The rescue service has now appealed the dismissal. If the appeal fails, they will file a new lawsuit.

This case reveals how technical oversights can derail legitimate legal claims, leaving public services without recourse for faulty equipment.

Mälardalen Rescue Service serves six municipalities in central Sweden. The organization operates 11 fire stations and maintains specialized rescue equipment. It was formed in 2021 through a municipal partnership.

The situation highlights the importance of proper legal procedures, even for emergency services with clear cases.
