Approximately 80 socially vulnerable residents were supposed to vacate Corona Camping in Borup today. The evacuation did not happen despite a formal order from Køge Municipality taking effect November 1.
Camping site co-owner Susanne Palskov Farnø explained their position. "We've tried finding solutions with Køge Municipality for a long time," she said. "They could have allowed tiny houses for temporary shelter, but the municipality won't listen."
She emphasized they cannot simply put people on the street with nowhere else to go. The decision to prohibit year-round residence came in June after a national appeals board ruled against permanent camping ground habitation.
Køge Municipality consequently revoked Corona Camping's winter permit starting November 1. Four political parties in the municipality support closing the camp. None have presented concrete rehousing plans for current residents.
Municipal inspectors will visit later this week to check compliance. Farnø welcomes their inspection. "We'll greet them with open arms," she stated. "We have nothing to hide and much to show them."
For many residents, Corona Camping represents more than temporary shelter. "This is a community and a home," Farnø explained. "We help people the system overlooks."
The ongoing uncertainty weighs heavily on residents. Stefan Hemmingsen described the constant stress of not knowing his housing future. "I don't thrive in apartments," he said. "Financially, I don't have countless housing options if I can't stay here."
Resident Tiah Ahlbirg finds the situation emotionally draining. "I've cried multiple times when asked about this," she shared. "Living here means so much to me. The constant trouble gives me a knot in my stomach."
The camping owners initiated legal action against Køge Municipality in June with attorney Knud Foldschack's assistance. They also entered local politics, forming the 'Corona Camping List' for socially vulnerable citizens in Køge.
They established an electoral alliance with the Conservative party ahead of November's municipal elections. Farnø insists their resistance isn't about election attention. "We're doing this to highlight the lack of humanity in the system," she said.
Municipal officials have offered no comment on the situation. The standoff continues as vulnerable residents face an uncertain winter in Denmark's growing housing crisis.
