Most Finnish people want the Saimaa ringed seal population to remain viable long-term. Protection measures for the critically endangered seal receive widespread approval from both residents around Lake Saimaa and Finns nationwide.

An environmental organization conducts a survey on this topic every five years, and this marks the third implementation. Positive attitudes toward protecting the Saimaa ringed seal have strengthened with each survey.

Why do fishing restrictions matter? The majority of survey respondents support extending the net fishing ban through July. Fishing nets and certain trap types pose dangers to seal pups, and reducing fishing gear deaths represents the most important method for protecting the seals.

The survey gathered responses from one thousand Finns aged 15 and older in late September and early October, including 300 residents from the Lake Saimaa region. Nearly one-fifth of all respondents reported currently or previously fishing with nets in Saimaa.

Current fishing restrictions to protect the Saimaa ringed seal are set in five-year periods. The current five-year period ends next spring.

Over two-thirds of respondents nationwide and nearly two-thirds in the Saimaa region support continuing fishing restrictions through July. A similar proportion believes the net fishing ban should apply to all fishing nets throughout the designated period.

What are the current restrictions? The net fishing ban currently runs from mid-April through June, except for whitefish nets where restrictions end June 21. The most dangerous fishing gear remains completely prohibited.

Most respondents across Finland and in the Saimaa region completely or somewhat agree that net fishing should be restricted in all areas where seal pups are known to be born.

Climate warming poses a major and rapidly growing threat to the seals, according to conservation officials. They emphasize that the population should reach viable levels as quickly as possible, and human-caused seal deaths should be eliminated.

The most effective approach would involve extending the spring net fishing ban through July for all fishing nets, conservation leaders stated.

The Saimaa ringed seal population is estimated at approximately 530 individuals. This rare freshwater seal exists only in Finland's Lake Saimaa system, making its protection particularly crucial for biodiversity.

Public opinion clearly favors stronger conservation measures, though balancing environmental protection with traditional fishing practices remains challenging for policymakers.
