Scandinavian Airlines is canceling flights between Stockholm and two Swedish regional cities during the Christmas holidays. The affected routes connect Stockholm with Kalmar and Halmstad.
The airline cites very low passenger demand as the reason for the cancellations. These flights will not operate during the Christmas weeks.
Alexandra Lindgren Kaoukji, the airline's communications director, explained the decision in a statement. "Market research showed these flights would not be financially viable," she said. "Like all businesses, we make scheduling decisions based on demand patterns."
Regular flight service on these routes will resume on January 6. The cancellations affect only specific regional connections during the holiday period.
This move reflects the ongoing challenge airlines face balancing route profitability with regional connectivity. Regional airports in Sweden often struggle to maintain consistent service during low-demand periods.
Kalmar and Halmstad are both important regional centers in southern Sweden. Kalmar is known for its historic castle and coastal location, while Halmstad serves as a key city in Halland county.
The temporary suspension shows how airlines must make tough decisions about less profitable routes, even during traditionally busy travel seasons.
