The Finnish Meteorological Institute (FMI) has issued a red-level severe thunderstorm warning for southern Finland. The affected cities include Helsinki, Turku, and Tampere. The warning is valid from 14:00 to 22:00 on May 7. People in these areas should prepare for heavy rain, frequent lightning, and strong wind gusts. Forecasters predict rainfall could reach up to 40 millimeters within just six hours. Wind gusts may exceed 25 meters per second. FMI warns that such conditions can cause flash flooding and power outages. This is the highest alert level. It means the weather poses a risk to life and property. FMI advises residents to secure loose outdoor objects, such as garden furniture or trampolines. The agency also recommends avoiding unnecessary travel during the storm period. Local utility companies have already prepared emergency crews. These crews are ready to respond quickly to any power outages that may occur. Similar storms in May 2025 caused widespread damage in the Uusimaa region. That damage included fallen trees and flooded roads. Authorities urge everyone to stay informed through official media coverage and public safety alerts. The FMI continues to monitor the situation closely.
