Mikael Lehtihet, a senior physician and researcher at Karolinska Institute, explains the increase. "We've become better at identifying men who actually have deficiencies," he stated. Lehtihet emphasizes that despite the dramatic percentage increase, relatively few men actually receive these prescriptions. He attributes part of the rise to young men's growing awareness about hormone health. More men now proactively check their levels than in previous years.
Online forums reveal troubling new developments. Men actively share techniques to artificially lower testosterone levels before medical testing. Common suggestions include poor sleep habits, alcohol consumption, and eating licorice. These methods can temporarily depress natural testosterone production, potentially helping users qualify for prescriptions they might not otherwise need.
Jens Persson, another medical expert, stresses the importance of clinical judgment. "Each physician must make individual prescribing decisions," he said. "Clear guidelines exist that must align with actual symptoms." When asked about unnecessary prescriptions, Persson responded cautiously: "Hopefully not."
Significant regional variations raise questions about prescribing consistency. Västernorrland County shows an 800 percent increase in testosterone prescriptions. Meanwhile, Kronoberg County records less than 200 percent growth. Lehtihet suggests these disparities might reflect differing physician attitudes rather than actual medical need. "Men shouldn't experience major differences in treatment access based on where they live," he noted. "Some individual doctors may simply have more liberal prescribing approaches."
The legal prescription increase coincides with a booming illegal steroid market. Police and customs authorities have shut down six illegal laboratories in recent years. They seized 16 million units of anabolic steroids during the same period. This parallel underground market suggests strong demand extends beyond legitimate medical needs.
