Social Democrats Lose Power in Aalborg After Century of Control

By Nordics Today

Aalborg's political landscape transforms as the Social Democrats lose power after 100 years of continuous control. A center-right coalition has formed behind Jes Lunde as the new mayor, marking one of Denmark's most significant municipal power shifts. The change reflects broader patterns of declining support for traditional parties across Danish municipalities.

Social Democrats Lose Power in Aalborg After Century of Control

Aalborg's political landscape has undergone a seismic shift as the Social Democrats lost control of the city government after exactly 100 years in power. The center-right coalition has secured a majority supporting Jes Lunde from the Danish Social Liberal Party as the new mayor.

The political realignment represents one of Denmark's most significant municipal power changes in recent history. Lasse Frimand from the Social Democrats no longer commands majority support despite his party remaining the largest in the north Jutland municipality.

Jes Lunde confirmed the development in statements to press agencies. He revealed that six center-right parties now back his leadership bid. These include the Social Liberals, Venstre, Conservatives, Liberal Alliance, Danish People's Party, and Denmark Democrats. Together they hold 16 council seats against the left bloc's 15.

This political reversal comes despite initial indications that Lasse Frimand would continue as mayor. He had announced his intention to remain in office during a Wednesday press conference following the election.

The negotiation process revealed deep political divisions. Jes Lunde described the situation as demonstrating that 'politics is a tough business.' He acknowledged the process hadn't been beautiful but emphasized his party's responsibility to accept the majority's will.

When asked about the dramatic nature of this political shift, Lunde acknowledged many would find it remarkable. He stressed the importance of political change, noting it's 'very healthy' that the same party doesn't hold the mayor's office for a century.

The Social Democrats remain the largest party in Aalborg despite losing voter support. They secured 32.2 percent of votes, representing a 4.7 percentage point decrease since the 2021 election and a substantial 16.5 point drop compared to 2017.

The power shift in Aalborg mirrors similar changes across Denmark. Copenhagen also ended over a century of Social Democratic rule, with the Socialist People's Party positioned to take the mayor's office. Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, herself from Aalborg, now faces the symbolic loss of her political home base.

Aalborg's political transformation reflects broader Danish voting patterns showing declining support for traditional center-left parties. The Social Democrats' century-long dominance in northern Jutland had become a political institution that many assumed would continue indefinitely.

Jes Lunde has indicated he will reach out to the Social Democrats about potential cooperation. He expressed desire to include them in the governing agreement and give them influence in the new administration.

The final agreement will be determined at a constitutive meeting in December. Until then, the political situation could potentially change again as parties negotiate the details of their cooperation.

This political shift in Denmark's fourth-largest city signals possible wider changes in Danish municipal politics. The breaking of traditional strongholds suggests voters are increasingly willing to consider alternative governing options beyond historical loyalties.
