Solna Centre Celebrates 60 Years with 1960s Nostalgia
Solna Centre celebrates its 60th anniversary with 1960s nostalgia events including vintage candy, children's activities, and music. The Swedish shopping center continues to emphasize social spaces beyond shopping. Anniversary celebrations run throughout next week.

Solna Centre turns 60 this week with celebrations taking visitors back to the 1960s. The shopping center first opened in 1965 with grand visions for community gathering spaces.
Former center manager Ulf Ă…kerblom predicted in 1965 that people would come not just to shop but to eat and enjoy themselves. Sixty years later, that vision remains relevant.
"The center as a meeting place is important," said Sofia Weman, marketing manager at Alecta Fastigheter. "We notice that social spaces like children's rooms, kitchens for heating food, and areas to sit and work or read newspapers attract many visitors."
Next week will feature special activities with a nostalgic theme. The center will recreate a 1960s-inspired shop with vintage motifs and old-fashioned candy.
Visitors can enjoy hot dogs, cake, and music during the celebrations. Children's activities will also be part of the anniversary events.
The continued emphasis on social spaces shows shopping centers must offer more than retail to stay relevant. This anniversary celebration highlights how Swedish shopping centers have evolved from pure retail to community hubs.
Solna Centre's longevity demonstrates the value of adapting to changing consumer needs while maintaining core community functions.
