Southern Finland continues to experience unusually mild autumn weather as winter's arrival remains uncertain. Temperatures have remained well above seasonal norms, with daytime readings staying above 10°C in many areas.
Residents in Helsinki were still jogging in shorts during late October. Early November has also brought warmer than expected conditions across the southern region. While other parts of Finland have already experienced winter temperatures, southern gardens and balconies still display blooming roses and pelargoniums.
Meteorologist Joonas Koskela from Forecast predicts a noticeable cooling trend beginning Monday. Morning temperatures will drop significantly, with daytime highs reaching only about 5°C. Despite the cooling, winter conditions remain distant.
"The coming days will be full of various turns and changes," Koskela explained.
Tuesday and Wednesday will bring milder air as a low-pressure system moves through, pushing temperatures back toward 10°C. By Thursday, substantial rainfall will reach southern areas. The low-pressure system will retreat by Friday, allowing colder air to flow across the entire country.
"During the weekend, overnight temperatures in the south could drop to -5°C, with daytime temperatures hovering around freezing," Koskela noted.
However, a definitive shift to winter weather won't occur until after next week according to current forecasts. Only then will southern Finland experience consistent sub-zero temperatures both day and night.
Koskela added an important caveat about forecasting uncertainty. "The further we look ahead, the more uncertainties appear in weather predictions."
