Police in Eastern Finland are investigating the theft of a speed enforcement camera as aggravated robbery. Authorities discovered the missing equipment on Wednesday along Highway 75 in Nilsiä, Kuopio.
Someone sawed through the camera pole and stole the entire camera unit that was mounted on top. The incident occurred on Kantatie 75, a national highway connecting central Finland to the Kuopio region.
Eastern Finland Police confirmed they are treating the case as aggravated theft due to the deliberate destruction of public property. All tips and information about the stolen speed camera can be reported to the police tip line at 0295 415 232 or via email at vihjeet.ita-suomi@poliisi.fi.
This appears to be a coordinated effort to disable traffic enforcement on a major Finnish highway. The theft raises concerns about public safety and the protection of traffic monitoring infrastructure.
Police initially provided incorrect location information, stating the camera was in Siilinjärvi before correcting it to Nilsiä in Kuopio. Such thefts of speed enforcement equipment remain relatively rare in Finland, where traffic safety systems are generally respected.
