Stockholm Hospital Pauses Pay Cuts After Staff Protests

A Stockholm hospital has paused planned salary cuts after strong staff protests and threatened resignations. Management will renegotiate with unions following emergency meetings with angry healthcare workers. The decision marks a significant reversal for hospital leadership.

Strong protests against planned salary reductions forced hospital management to reconsider their approach

Capio St. Göran's Hospital in Stockholm has halted planned salary reductions following strong staff protests. Management announced it will renegotiate with unions after an emergency meeting with employees.

Hospital workers had threatened resignations over proposed wage cuts linked to changes in overtime compensation. The decision affected nursing staff and healthcare assistants at one of Stockholm's major hospitals.

"This is the wrong direction to take," said nursing assistant Frida Palmqvist. She now feels hopeful that management is listening to healthcare workers' concerns.

CEO Gustaf Storm told staff the hospital would pause the payroll system changes during a packed emergency meeting. "We've decided to reconsider our approach," Storm said in a statement. "I understand many people feel disappointed and let down by our initial announcement."

The reversal shows even well-established institutions can misjudge employee reactions to cost-cutting measures. Hospital management clearly underestimated how strongly staff would oppose what amounted to pay reductions during ongoing healthcare challenges.
