Stockholm's new metro stations will all include public toilets. This corrects earlier information that said no restrooms were planned. All 18 stations in the expanding tunnelbana system will have facilities.
Currently only four metro stations offer toilets. These are exclusively at stations connecting to staffed commuter train hubs.
Regional officials initially claimed the new stations wouldn't include restrooms. They now acknowledge this was incorrect.
"I passed along wrong information," said Emma Sahlman, press officer for Stockholm Region's metro expansion administration. "We've worked on the new metro for over ten years and usually know everything. We were surprised we missed this."
Sahlman could not explain how the error occurred. She simply stated they had overlooked the toilet installations.
The reversal highlights communication gaps in major infrastructure projects. International readers should note that Stockholm's metro serves over 1.2 million daily passengers.
Public toilet access remains limited across Stockholm's existing metro network. The new stations will substantially improve facilities when completed.
This development addresses a basic need that was nearly overlooked entirely. The admission of error comes unusually late in the planning process.
