Stockholm Region will build a new local hospital in Handen. The governing parties have allocated 2.5 billion SEK for the project. That equals about $230 million USD.
The current Handen Hospital opened in 1970. It has undergone several renovations, but officials say its technical lifespan has ended.
Aida Hadžialić, the region's financial councilor, explained the decision. "As Stockholm grows, healthcare must keep pace," she said in a statement. "Eastern Södertörn currently lacks good coverage. We need healthcare where people live and work. Handen serves as a natural hub and designated regional center."
Eastern Södertörn refers to the southeastern part of Stockholm County. This area has seen substantial population growth in recent years.
Planners have completed a preliminary study. They will now conduct a more detailed investigation. The new hospital could open between 2032 and 2033.
Opposition councilor Axel Conradi criticized the timing. He noted that the Social Democrats promised this hospital during the 2022 elections. "They're only starting planning now, three years later," he said in a written comment. "During those same three years, their policies increased the need for a new hospital by closing outpatient care facilities."
The political debate highlights how infrastructure projects often face delays. The substantial cost also raises questions about budget priorities in Sweden's healthcare system.
Stockholm's population continues growing rapidly. This creates constant pressure to expand healthcare services throughout the region.
