Residents of a Stockholm apartment building have won a major victory against their landlord. A court stopped planned demolition of their homes after a twelve-year campaign to empty the building.
The seven remaining tenants at Silverskopan 3 on Torsgränd in Stockholm's Vasastan district represent most remaining first-hand contract holders. Most apartments now sit empty or rent through short-term contracts.
Sven Lindblom has lived in the building since 1998. He said approximately 125 tenants moved out unnecessarily during the long dispute.
The landlord is Afa Insurance, which provides coverage for labor market parties. Its top executive is former Swedish Trade Union Confederation chairman Karl-Petter Thorwaldsson.
This case highlights Sweden's ongoing housing shortage and the power imbalance between large property owners and individual tenants. The court's intervention shows even well-connected companies face legal limits when displacing long-term residents.
