A man in his 30s suspected of espionage for allegedly having met with Russian intelligence services remains under investigation in Sweden. The preliminary investigation is still ongoing. He was remanded into custody in early January, but authorities have not been able to carry out a required personal assessment because he has refused to cooperate. According to a statement from the Swedish Prison and Probation Service that SVT has reviewed, the agency has been unable to conduct a risk and needs evaluation due to the man’s lack of participation. The statement reads: "The Probation Service has not been able to conduct a risk and needs assessment regarding NN because he has not wanted to take part in the personal investigation. The Probation Service cannot decide on a probation sentence." The suspect denies all allegations of criminal activity. He previously held a project-based employment position with the Swedish Armed Forces between 2018 and 2022. He claims he has been persecuted by Sweden’s National Defence Radio Establishment, commonly known as FRA, and the Military Intelligence and Security Service, referred to as Must. Based on these claims, he has filed formal complaints against both agencies with the Swedish Parliamentary Ombudsman, also known as Justitieombudsmannen. His refusal to engage in the personal assessment process has halted certain procedural steps in his case, including any potential consideration of non-custodial sentencing options.
