Firefighter's Three-Day Parental Leave Results in $2,400 Pay Cut

By Nordics Today •

In brief

A Swedish firefighter faced a $2,400 pay cut after taking just three days of parental leave. The deduction resulted from a new collective agreement that more than doubled daily leave deductions. Rescue services and insurance agencies disagree on calculation methods, leaving workers caught in between.

A Swedish firefighter received a shocking pay deduction after taking just three days of parental leave. Miriam David discovered her employer had deducted nearly 25,000 SEK (approximately $2,400) from her paycheck.

She initially thought it was an accounting error. When she contacted human resources, they confirmed the deduction was correct. The amount totaled about 8,400 SEK per day.

"I asked what would have happened if I stayed home one more day," David said. "Would I have received no salary at all?"

David works as a part-time firefighter while studying full-time to become a nurse. She expects to complete her nursing degree around the new year.

During summer 2024, David took parental leave to spend time with her daughter and partner. The daily deductions then were about 3,700 SEK. The recent deduction more than doubled that amount.

The change followed a new collective agreement implemented this spring. Several firefighters at Rescue Service South express frustration with their employer. They claim they weren't properly informed about the new agreement's terms.

"If I had known the deductions would be this large, I wouldn't have taken leave," David stated.

Maria Thögersen, HR chief at Rescue Service South, defended the calculations. She said the organization follows the agreement and believes their calculations are correct. Thögersen declined to discuss individual cases.

"If an employee reports something appears incorrect, we review whether the system made a mistake," Thögersen explained. "We also perform manual calculations."

Thögersen described the situation as unfortunate. She noted they attempted to negotiate a local agreement that would improve conditions, but parties couldn't reach consensus.

The employer's calculation method differs from Sweden's Social Insurance Agency. David received only about 5,200 SEK in benefits for her three days of leave. This matched the amount she received during summer 2024.

Thögersen confirmed they've contacted the Social Insurance Agency with their concerns. Rescue Service South believes calculating parental leave by hours rather than days would be more relevant. This approach isn't currently possible.

Elias Persson, a development officer at the Social Insurance Agency, responded to the criticism. "The legislation provides no room to consider how deductions are calculated," Persson stated.

The situation highlights how well-intentioned family policies can create unexpected financial hardships. When benefit calculations don't align between employers and government agencies, workers bear the financial burden.
