A Västtrafik bus replacement service took passengers on an unexpected detour when the driver got lost and became stuck in a narrow residential area. The incident occurred during the morning commute from Lerum to Gothenburg.
Tove Berggren was among the passengers waiting at Ekebacken stop. The bus arrived 45 minutes late for its scheduled 7:27 AM departure. Several frustrated commuters had already ordered taxis or arranged other transportation.
"It turned out to be a very wrong decision. We should have taken the taxi instead," Tove said.
The journey took a strange turn when the bus passed through Partille. An unusual stop request prompted the driver to divert from the normal route. Passengers grew concerned as the bus navigated increasingly narrow roads.
"I realized we were completely wrong when we weren't even heading toward Gothenburg anymore," Tove recalled. "How on earth would he turn around?"
Instead of turning back, the driver entered a residential neighborhood with parked cars lining the streets. The large bus struggled to navigate the tight spaces, drawing attention from surprised residents.
"I saw a man in slippers and a blue bathrobe, his hair all messy," Tove described. "He just stood there watching, and I laughed out loud. I couldn't help it!"
The situation became increasingly surreal as the bus attempted to maneuver through the neighborhood. Local residents eventually assisted the driver by providing directions to escape the maze-like streets.
Västtrafik's press service confirmed this was not part of the normal route for bus 22R, which typically runs directly from Lerum to Gothenburg without detours.
Malin Ulfhager from Västtrafik's communications department said the traffic management team had not been notified about the incident. "Fortunately, it's rare for drivers to get lost," she stated. "We apologize that this happened."
She advised passengers who notice routing errors to politely inform drivers or contact customer service during their journey. Affected passengers can also claim delay compensation through standard procedures.
The incident highlights the challenges of replacement bus services operating on unfamiliar routes. While such errors are uncommon, they demonstrate how quickly routine commutes can turn into unexpected adventures.
After navigating back to the highway, the bus finally reached Åkareplatsen in Gothenburg. Tove reflected that she should have offered some kind words to the driver, acknowledging his difficult situation.
