Swedish Foreign Minister Criticizes Gaza Flotilla Activists
Sweden's foreign minister criticizes activists who joined the Gaza flotilla despite government warnings. She says they received consular support but complicated their situation by refusing to cooperate with Israeli authorities. The minister also addresses mass email campaigns targeting her ministry.

Swedish Foreign Minister Maria Malmer Stenergard has criticized Swedish citizens participating in the Global Sumud Flotilla to Gaza. She said these activists ignored government travel warnings against joining the protest convoy. Despite their clear personal responsibility, they still received consular support from the Swedish embassy in Tel Aviv.
Malmer Stenergard confirmed Sweden repeatedly contacted Israeli authorities about the activists' treatment. She noted the flotilla did not face violence at sea during the protest mission.
The foreign minister expressed particular concern about the activists' refusal to sign deportation documents. She said this choice unnecessarily prolonged their deportation process in Israel.
Malmer Stenergard also criticized campaigns encouraging people to email and call the foreign ministry. These efforts generated 70,000 emails to the ministry, creating administrative challenges.
This situation highlights the tension between citizen activism and official government positions. Swedish authorities must balance protecting citizens abroad with maintaining diplomatic relationships.
