Swedish Youth Wing Proposes Tax-Free Start to Working Life

By Nordics Today •

Sweden's Moderate Youth League proposes making the first 500,000 kronor tax-free for young workers starting their careers. The plan aims to combat youth unemployment but faces opposition from party leadership concerned about costs. This marks the latest attempt to push through tax relief for young Swedes entering the workforce.

Swedish Youth Wing Proposes Tax-Free Start to Working Life

Sweden's Moderate Party youth wing wants young workers to pay zero tax on their first earnings. The proposal would make the initial 500,000 kronor ($48,000) completely tax-free for people starting their careers.

The Moderate Youth League argues this would tackle Sweden's structural youth unemployment problem. They say it would make work more financially rewarding while reducing hiring costs for companies.

Douglas Thor, who leads the proposal, explained the reasoning. "Sweden has problems with structural unemployment among young people," he said in a statement. "With this proposal, work would pay more and companies would find it cheaper to hire young workers."

The reform carries an estimated price tag between 4 and 7 billion kronor ($380-670 million). Thor calls this a reasonable priority. "Helping people get a good start in life and save for an apartment or car through hard work represents very good policy," he added.

This marks the latest attempt by the youth wing to push through tax relief for young workers. Previous efforts failed in 2015 under then-leader Anna Kinberg Batra and again last year when the proposal narrowly lost to the main party board.

The party leadership continues opposing the youth wing's plan. Finance Minister Elisabeth Svantesson noted the government already implements major tax initiatives. "We naturally want people to have more money in their wallets going forward," she said. "But it doesn't necessarily need to be designed as the youth wing wants."

The proposal highlights ongoing tensions between conservative party factions over economic policy direction. While popular among young members, the tax cut faces skepticism from budget-conscious leadership concerned about revenue losses.
