A witness in Tampere captured footage of two young people clinging to the outside of a moving tram. The incident occurred Monday evening on tram line one. The individuals wedged themselves between tram carriages at the Hippos stop.
The witness reported seeing two teenagers jump from the platform to hang from the coupling area. They rode in this dangerous position to the next stop at Kaleva Church before jumping off and running away.
VR's operational manager Vesa Rauhala called the behavior completely unacceptable. He said these stowaways risked serious injury with their actions.
Rauhala explained the dangers are very real. These riders hung almost in mid-air without handles or foot space. The trams move and sway, making it extremely difficult to hold on. Speeds on this route range from 20 to 70 kilometers per hour.
The tram company has now alerted all drivers to watch for similar activity. Drivers should stop immediately if they spot people riding outside vehicles. While trams have side cameras, Rauhala noted drivers might still struggle to see external riders.
This appears to be part of a concerning trend. The witness recalled seeing similar behavior in videos on social media platforms.
Rauhala hasn't yet considered potential legal consequences for those caught tram surfing. He emphasized that people must understand this is dangerous, potentially life-threatening behavior.
Local authorities first reported this incident. The video shows just how far some will go for thrill-seeking despite obvious risks to their safety.
