Police in Espoo report multiple criminal complaints against a group of teenagers in Westend. Officers received at least five reports within two hours on Monday evening about disruptive youth behavior.
Commissioner Hannu Väänänen from Western Uusimaa Police Department confirmed the incidents go beyond simple disturbances. "We're currently investigating at least two attempted robberies," Väänänen stated.
Authorities suspect the teens committed additional offenses. These include minor sexual crimes, assaults, public order violations, and sexual harassment offenses. "Bystanders and random pedestrians were targeted with behavior that gives us reason to suspect sexual crimes," Väänänen explained.
The alleged crimes occurred between 4 PM and 6 PM in a concentrated area. Locations included Mäenrinne, Ankkurisaarentie, and the Westend fitness stairs in Espoo's Westend and Toppelund districts.
Police are still determining the exact number of individuals involved. "Not ten, but more than two," Väänänen characterized. "The precise composition remains unclear."
All suspects are believed to be underage males. Finland's age of criminal responsibility is 15 years. "Based on the nature of the acts, I'd imagine these are from the younger rather than older end," Väänänen noted.
The commissioner suggested the teens might not fully grasp their actions' severity. "However, victims experienced this behavior as extremely disturbing and criminal," he emphasized. "I don't wonder at all that criminal reports were filed."
Police continue identifying suspects and gathering evidence. Next steps include interviewing victims and reviewing available surveillance footage. Officers aim to apprehend suspects, conduct interviews, notify parents, and file child protection reports.
Väänänen called for additional witnesses to come forward. "If anyone else in this area fell victim to the same group, we'd gladly receive more information," he added.
This case stands out for its intensity. "This is exceptional in that such a youth group generated this many criminal reports in such a short time," Väänänen observed.
The incidents represent more than typical teenage noise complaints. Authorities classify them as active criminal behavior requiring serious investigation.
Westend represents one of Espoo's most affluent neighborhoods, making this concentrated criminal activity particularly alarming for residents accustomed to low crime rates.
