A 16-year-old boy sustained serious injuries in a farming accident when his hand became trapped in a circular saw blade. The 57-year-old farm owner received a conviction for workplace safety violations and breaching youth worker protection regulations.

The teenager was alone in the barn cutting marker posts for drainage ditches when the saw blade caught on a post. His left hand made contact with the rotating blade. The injuries required surgical treatment and some may cause permanent damage.

Court documents revealed the table saw lacked essential safety equipment. Missing components included blade guards and a riving knife. Blade guards prevent hands from approaching the blade, while riving knives stop wood from pinching during cutting.

The saw placement created additional hazards. Positioned between hay and straw bales, the area presented clear tripping and slipping dangers.

The July 2023 incident occurred in Finland's Pirkanmaa region. The farm owner admitted the charges but wasn't present during the accident. He stated the boy was supposed to make sticks with another person.

The court imposed a 20-day fine penalty totaling 820 euros based on the man's income. The injured teenager didn't seek compensation from the farmer. The ruling is legally binding.

Farm safety standards remain under scrutiny across Nordic countries. This case highlights how basic safety omissions can lead to life-altering consequences for young workers.
