Around 60 young people aged 15 to 20 are participating in military training courses in Östersund. They come from various regions across Sweden including Uppland, Gävleborg, Dalarna, Västernorrland and Jämtland.
Most participants are taking basic courses, while some have previous experience. Seventeen-year-old Lova Engström from Ope said she joined primarily for the community aspect. She is now taking her third practical course.
During the training week, participants live in tents or shelters. They practice shooting, first aid, and even get to fly in SK 50 Safir aircraft.
Another 17-year-old, Ruben Churchill from Frösön, wants to become a combat pilot. He said he's taking the basic course to be prepared.
Carmen Söderholm from Kovland near Sundsvall said she has been passionate about the military since childhood. She felt it was natural to participate in the training.
Interest in defense and volunteer organizations has grown amid increasing global instability. The Swedish Air Force Volunteers organization has seen particular growth in applications.
The training coordinator noted they receive strong interest every year for these youth military programs.
Sweden maintains 18 different volunteer organizations that recruit and train volunteers for defense tasks and crisis management support. These include the Voluntary Air Force Corps, Voluntary Radio Organization, and Swedish Red Cross among others.
This expanded youth military training reflects Sweden's broader security policy shift following regional tensions. The country has been strengthening both professional and volunteer defense capabilities in recent years.
