Three new K-Citymarket hypermarkets will open in the Helsinki metropolitan area. Retail group Kesko announced the expansion plans this week. One store will replace a smaller supermarket in Helsinki's Kalasatama district. That location will open between 2027 and 2028 according to current estimates.
The Kalasatama store will operate inside the Redi shopping center. Redi has faced financial challenges in recent years. Several restaurants and shops have closed their doors in the complex. The shopping center has reportedly been unprofitable throughout its nearly seven-year history.
Two additional K-Citymarket stores will open in neighboring cities. Vantaa's Tikkurila district will get a store in Tikkuri shopping center. Espoo's city center will welcome another location in Espoontori mall.
Construction on the Tikkurila store may begin in the late 2020s. The Espoo location could open around 2028 based on current projections.
Kesko reported sales growth across the Helsinki region and Uusimaa area during the first three quarters. The expansion comes despite challenges in the retail sector.
This represents a substantial investment in physical retail spaces. The company appears confident about consumer demand in these specific locations, even as some shopping centers struggle.
