Two University of Jyväskylä professors secured Finland's prestigious Academy Professor positions. Philosophy professor Jari Kaukua and mathematical ecology professor Otso Ovaskainen both received six-year funding awards.
The Academy of Finland selected fifteen new Academy Professors nationwide. Only two came from the University of Jyväskylä in Central Finland. The competition drew 244 applicants for these elite research positions.
Professor Kaukua studies philosophical illuminationism in Islamic intellectual history. His work focuses on Shihab al-Din al-Suhrawardi's illuminationist philosophy and its reception from the 13th to early 17th centuries.
Professor Ovaskainen researches digital twins of biodiversity. He creates computational models that provide detailed, interactive representations of real-world ecological processes.
Both professors will begin their six-year terms in January 2026, continuing through 2031. This marks Ovaskainen's second Academy Professor appointment, having previously received funding from 2021 through 2026.
The dual appointments represent a substantial achievement for the university. They demonstrate the institution's strength in both humanities and environmental sciences despite intense national competition.
What does Academy Professor funding mean for research? These positions provide long-term financial security that enables ambitious, multi-year projects without constant grant applications. The six-year timeframe allows researchers to tackle complex questions that require sustained investigation.
