Upgraded Trams Return to Gothenburg Streets
Gothenburg's iconic trams are getting major upgrades in the Czech Republic. Six refurbished vehicles have returned, with 79 total scheduled for modernization. The project extends the life of the city's vital public transportation backbone.

Seventy-nine Gothenburg trams will travel to the Czech Republic for upgrades in several batches. Six upgraded M31 model trams have already returned to Sweden's second city. Local transport officials say residents could ride the refurbished vehicles soon if testing goes well. Sara Ihrlund, head of rail traffic at transport authority Västtrafik, described the trams as reliable workhorses in a public statement. The M31 model has served Gothenburg's public transit system since the 1990s. This refurbishment program extends their operational life rather than replacing aging infrastructure. Gothenburg's tram network carries over 300,000 daily passengers across Scandinavia's largest light rail system. The city continues investing in public transit upgrades while delaying full fleet replacement.
