A woman received a prison sentence for attempted manslaughter after stabbing a man at a Vantaa apartment hotel near Helsinki Airport. The incident occurred on August 1 when three people returned to their accommodation after visiting the victim's parents.
What started the violent confrontation? An argument began during the car ride back to the hotel. The dispute continued inside the hotel building. First, the 49-year-old male victim slapped the 44-year-old woman with an open hand. She responded by stabbing him three times in the back with a knife.
The woman immediately left the scene. The bleeding victim alerted another man present to call police. Emergency services received the report around 2:30 PM.
All three individuals involved knew each other for approximately 30 years. Their accounts of events differed significantly regarding both the car argument and hotel confrontation.
The woman claimed self-defense in court. She testified thinking, "If you hurt me, I must defend myself." The court rejected this justification for the stabbing.
Eastern Uusimaa District Court sentenced the woman to three years and seven months in prison for attempted manslaughter. She must also pay the victim 7,440 euros in compensation for suffering and cosmetic damage.
The stabbing victim received his own sentence for assault. He received 25 day-fines totaling 300 euros for slapping the woman. The court ordered him to pay her 100 euros compensation for pain.
This ruling remains subject to appeal. Court documents reveal both the woman and her spouse face entry bans in Finland. They previously received lengthy prison sentences for serious violence seven years ago.
In that prior case, the couple assaulted an acquaintance on Kerava train tracks. The woman was convicted of aggravated assault, aggravated involuntary manslaughter, and aggravated robbery.
The repeated violent behavior suggests deeper issues within this social circle that authorities continue to monitor.
