Eighty-eight-year-old Eine Sorakari spent over eight months preparing to die. Her symptoms began in late 2024 and included persistent, severe diarrhea, abdominal pain, and poor general health. In April of last year, a scan of her pancreas showed an abnormality that a physician at Helsinki University Hospital interpreted as cancer. The doctor estimated that Sorakari had only days, weeks, or months left to live. Sorakari, a resident of Helsinki, waited at home for death during this period, which lasted more than eight months. New imaging conducted in December revealed that she never had cancer at all. Instead, the condition was chronic pancreatitis. On medical scans, a tumor caused by pancreatic cancer can appear identical to the inflammation seen in chronic pancreatitis, which led to the misdiagnosis. Sorakari described the experience as pure hell. She said the worst part was watching her loved ones endure grief and emotional distress. She now believes that Helsinki University Hospital did not conduct a thorough enough investigation into her condition. She plans to file a formal complaint against the hospital regarding the incorrect diagnosis. She also intends to submit a compensation claim to the Patient Insurance Centre. The case highlights how similar certain medical conditions can appear on diagnostic imaging and the serious consequences that can follow from a mistaken interpretation.
