Danish churches must now prepare for crises. A new national requirement takes effect in January. All parishes need contingency plans for burials during emergencies.

Bornholm island is leading this effort. Jørn Pedersen, a churchwarden in Rønne, is creating a shared emergency document. His plan will help all parishes on the island meet the new standards.

Pedersen explained his approach. "We received materials from the ministry," he said. "I thought other parishes shouldn't start from scratch. So I'm making a common document everyone can use."

The Danish Church handles vital registration in Denmark. This includes recording births and deaths. Without this function, newborns couldn't enter the national registry. The deceased couldn't be buried properly.

Pedersen has worked on the plan since summer vacation ended. He's not finished yet. Daily church duties compete with emergency planning time.

He considers practical challenges. "We take electricity for granted," Pedersen noted. "But without power, how do we transport information to funeral directors? How do we make copies without printers?"

His solution includes carbon paper for manual copying. He demonstrated how to create simple duplicates using this method.

Rasmus Dahlberg studies societal security and preparedness. He supports the church emergency plans but says Denmark is late to act.

"These plans make sense because the church plays an important societal role," Dahlberg stated. "But the headline for all our current preparedness work is a provocative 'better late than never.'"

Dahlberg praised Pedersen's island-wide approach. "The rest of Bornholm should thank the churchwarden," he said. "The best plans are those that exist and get used. Having someone adapt them for everyone is excellent."

The Minister for the Interior and Housing disagreed about timing. Morten Dahlin said emergency plans always existed within the church system.

"The Church has always had contingency plans," the minister explained. "But increasing international uncertainty made us revisit whether preparedness plans are in order everywhere—including the church."

Pedersen remains satisfied with his progress despite the workload. "It's taken a long time, and we're not done yet," he confirmed. "But we'll be ready by January 1."

This practical approach to emergency planning shows how local initiatives can help implement national requirements. Bornholm's churches may serve as a model for other Danish communities facing similar mandates.
