Police in Northern Jutland have charged a former senior construction advisor with document forgery. The advisor allegedly falsified an asbestos test result during a major renovation project in Aalborg.
The employee worked for consulting firm Brix & Kamp. He is accused of altering laboratory documents from environmental testing company Eurofins VBM.
Former bricklayer Johnny Albertsen welcomes the court case. He worked at the Badehusvej construction site where the incident occurred.
"Someone deliberately falsified information, so it's fantastic that charges have been filed," Albertsen said. "This shows you cannot cheat with this stuff and gamble with people's lives."
The advisor changed a laboratory conclusion from positive to negative for asbestos. This put workers at risk of exposure to the dangerous material.
Eurofins VBM director Thea Fynbo said the court case represents an important step. "A ruling can help ensure trust in the industry," she stated.
Asbestos exposure can cause life-threatening diseases like mesothelioma over time. Proper testing is crucial for worker safety.
"Our credibility is at stake, and that's unacceptable," Fynbo explained. "But most importantly, this is about people's health and safety."
The Badehusvej project has faced controversy for months. Many tradespeople may have worked in hazardous asbestos conditions without proper protection.
Reidar Kogstad heads the Building Trades Association in Aalborg. He finds it satisfying that someone will be held accountable.
"This isn't the only issue though," Kogstad noted. "We've raised many questions about overall asbestos handling at that construction site."
Kogstad hopes other construction companies will review their asbestos procedures. He wants this case to serve as a warning.
Albertsen worries about his own health after potential exposure. He hopes the case will deter future testing fraud.
"People shouldn't gamble with others' well-being," Albertsen said. "I trust the legal system will unravel this case properly."
Brix & Kamp declined to comment on charges against their former employee.
Construction safety experts note that falsified asbestos tests represent a serious breach of trust. When companies cut corners on safety documentation, workers bear the ultimate risk.
