Grades in written Danish continue to fall across upper secondary educations, the Ministry of Education said Thursday, according to Berlingske. At stx, the general upper secondary schools, the average grade in Danish A-level fell from 6.8 to 6.2 from 2018 to 2026, according to Politiken.
The decline is also seen across the upper secondary educations, both from last year to this year and over a longer period. This year's graduates are the first cohort to have had access to generative artificial intelligence throughout their upper secondary education.
"These numbers worry me," Minister of Education Magnus Heunicke (S) said in a press release. "Artificial intelligence has in a very short time changed students' everyday lives. And we cannot ignore what it may mean for their academic skills. Because if AI becomes a shortcut around the work of writing, analyzing and expressing oneself, then we risk that students learn less."
Heunicke added: "Our young people must learn to think for themselves. Also in a time with artificial intelligence. we have already taken the first steps with an AI package for the upper secondary schools, and the government will come with more initiatives. In early September, a new Pisa survey showed decline in reading, mathematics and science for 15-year-old students, creating renewed debate about Danish school students' academic level.
