Parties Push to Refill Denmark's Depleted Green Fund

Denmark's primary climate policy fund is running dangerously low. The Green Fund now holds just 900 million kroner remaining. Multiple political parties demand immediate replenishment to continue environmental investments.

SF party spokesperson Signe Munk calls the fund "the transition's credit line." She says Denmark must refill it to launch more green initiatives. The Socialists, Radical Left, and Red-Green Alliance all support refilling the treasury.

Finance Minister Nicolai Wammen will convene negotiations before year's end. He confirmed the government will call parties for discussions about the fund's future.

Originally established in summer 2022, the Green Fund totals 53 billion kroner. The Social Democratic government created it with support from Liberals, SF, Radical Left, Red-Green Alliance, and Conservatives. Money accumulates annually from fiscal space allocations, building toward the 2040 target.

This treasury has financed numerous climate agreements. Projects range from climate adaptation to carbon capture and storage technologies.

SF wants future funds directed toward greening Danish landscapes. They propose enhancing biodiversity and natural areas. Signe Munk expresses concern that environmental efforts have stalled recently.

SF and Radical Left suggest allocating three billion kroner annually. Radical Left's climate spokesperson Samira Nawa emphasizes their primary focus remains eliminating fossil fuels.

Red-Green Alliance climate spokesperson Leila Stockmarr says Denmark needs a new climate law. She wants more ambitious climate targets toward 2035.

Political posturing often delays concrete climate action, despite widespread agreement about urgent needs. The empty fund threatens to halt Denmark's green transition precisely when acceleration matters most.
