Finland's Social Democratic Party (SDP) continues its commanding lead in voter support, holding steady at 25 percent according to a new poll conducted for Helsingin Sanomat. The survey shows modest gains for the two main government parties, Prime Minister Petteri Orpo's National Coalition Party and the Finns Party, while the opposition Centre Party saw a slight decline.

SDP Maintains Commanding Poll Position

The latest figures confirm the SDP's position as the country's most popular party, a status it has held consistently throughout the current government's term. The 25 percent rating represents stable support for the main opposition party led by Antti Lindtman. The poll's margin of error is 1.5 percentage points for the largest parties, meaning the SDP's lead remains statistically significant and robust. This consistent performance sets the stage for the next parliamentary election cycle, with the SDP positioned as a central contender for government leadership.

Government Coalition Sees Modest Uptick

Support for Prime Minister Petteri Orpo's National Coalition Party (Kokoomus) rose to 18.4 percent, a slight increase of 0.4 percentage points since December. Its government partner, the Finns Party, also saw a small gain, rising 0.3 points to 13.4 percent. Combined, the two ruling parties now hold 38.8 percent support, a collective increase of 0.7 points. These incremental gains suggest a degree of consolidation among government supporters despite a challenging period of economic reforms and budgetary constraints debated in the Eduskunta. The government's combined support remains below a parliamentary majority, reflecting the continued fragmented nature of Finnish politics.

Opposition Landscape and Smaller Parties

Between the two largest government parties sits the Centre Party, whose support dipped 0.5 points to 14.3 percent. This places it 4.1 points behind Kokoomus and just 0.9 points ahead of the Finns Party. The Left Alliance recorded support of exactly 10 percent, a gain of 0.5 points, solidifying its position as the fifth-largest party. The Green Party registered 8.3 percent, a minor decrease of 0.3 points. The smaller party Liike Nyt stood at 1.5 percent. The overall changes across the entire party spectrum were minimal, with most shifts falling within the poll's margin of error, indicating a period of relative stability in voter preferences.

Poll Methodology and Political Context

The poll was conducted by Verian on behalf of Helsingin Sanomat between December 15, 2025, and January 19, 2026. A total of 4,050 people responded via an online panel. The sample represents the Finnish population aged 18 and over, excluding residents of the Ã…land Islands. The results arrive as the Orpo government approaches the mid-point of its term, having navigated several contentious legislative packages focusing on austerity, labor market reforms, and adjustments to Finland's welfare model. The SDP's persistent lead in opposition underscores its critical role in shaping political discourse and its readiness to challenge government policy in parliament and public debate.
