A car carrying four people plunged through the ice into the sea off Itäsatama harbor in Hanko on Saturday around noon, according to the Gulf of Finland Coast Guard. Three occupants managed to escape immediately through a window. The fourth person remained trapped in the sinking vehicle for a couple of minutes but eventually got out and reached safety on the ice. Their dog did not survive and stayed inside the submerged car. Captain Lieutenant Saku Komujärvi, Director General of the Gulf of Finland Coast Guard, told Helsingin Sanomat that the vehicle went under in open water far from shore. He noted the group had driven onto the ice voluntarily. “The ice conditions appear solid and may look deceptively strong, which can encourage such attempts,” he said. “But currents or shallow areas might create treacherous spots where the ice is unexpectedly weak.” All four individuals exited the car on their own, though the last one spent several minutes partially submerged. Those in the car also called for help. Authorities have not yet determined whether any criminal activity was involved. Details like the individuals’ ages or their relationships remain unknown, though both men and women were present. The car sank completely beneath the ice, and officials will now assess potential environmental risks, including possible fuel leakage.
