Gothenburg Expands Long Trams, Removes Three Stops
Gothenburg introduces longer trams on route 5 to speed up service, but removes three stops in the process. Transport officials say faster travel times justify the station eliminations, though some passengers will face longer walks.

Gothenburg will soon deploy extra-long trams on route 5. Three tram stops will disappear as part of the change. Camilla Holtet, business area manager at Västtrafik, said in a statement that tram traffic needs to speed up. Västtrafik operates public transport in Sweden's second-largest city. The new trams measure over 45 meters long. They can carry nearly 300 passengers each. The removed stops include Svingeln, Welandergatan, and Olskroken. Route 5 serves central Gothenburg and western suburbs. This marks the second phase of long tram implementation. Similar vehicles already operate on route 4. City planners want to reduce travel times across the network. Some residents will now walk further to catch their tram. The trade-off prioritizes speed over convenience for certain neighborhoods. Public transport upgrades often face this balancing act between efficiency and accessibility.
