Helsinki has banned electric mopeds and scooters from the Kaisaniemi Tunnel bicycle parking facility. The new restriction took effect this week following safety concerns.
City officials confirmed the prohibition targets electric mopeds, electric scooters, and similar motorized vehicles. Regular bicycles, e-bikes, and electric cargo bikes remain welcome in the underground facility.
Antti Nousiainen, property management director for City Transport, called the move a proactive safety measure. He cited electric vehicle fires occurring across Finland and internationally.
"We're constantly conducting risk assessments for all electric vehicles," Nousiainen said. "E-bike fire risks have also been identified."
The timing raises questions since the parking facility only opened in July. No fires have occurred there involving electric mopeds or bicycles.
Food delivery drivers appear most affected by the new rules. They rely heavily on electric mopeds and have used the tunnel as a secure parking and maintenance spot.
Delivery workers previously told media they valued the facility's warmth and security. Platform companies typically don't provide social spaces for couriers.
When asked if the ban specifically targets delivery drivers, officials denied any connection to user groups. They maintain the restriction solely addresses device safety.
The bicycle parking facility runs beneath Helsinki's central railway station. It connects Töölönlahti Street with Kaisaniemi Park.
This creates a practical dilemma for delivery workers who need secure parking. Many have faced increased moped thefts in recent months.
The policy seems inconsistent since e-bikes with similar battery technology remain permitted. Officials didn't explain why e-bikes face different standards than electric mopeds.
