Residents in Helsinki's Puistola district are protesting city plans to cancel a long-planned community center. The Puistola Association launched a campaign called 'borrowing the library empty' to demonstrate community support for local libraries.
The protest runs from October 30 to November 5 at both Puistola and Tapulikaupunki libraries. Organizers want residents to borrow as many books as possible during this period.
Emilia Haapanen, chair of the Puistola Association, explained their strategy. 'Our goal is to show the library's necessity through concrete usage numbers,' she said in a statement.
The city argues Puistola and Tapulikaupunki libraries are too close together. Officials had planned to merge them into a new multi-purpose building in Suuntimopuisto park near the main railway line.
'If the community center isn't built, we fear one library will close completely,' Haapanen added.
Helsinki's Culture and Leisure Committee demanded the project's return to construction plans on September 9. The committee stated the city must either restore the community center project or present clear alternative plans for library and youth facilities.
The community center was included in city construction plans until recently. Current proposals have removed it entirely.
This protest highlights growing tension between Helsinki residents and city planners over neighborhood services. Library usage statistics from the campaign week will likely influence future decisions about local facilities.
